A 2.5 × 3.5 inch rectangle has a 5:7 aspect ratio. Preserving that ratio matters even when you work at a different resolution. If the canvas is stretched to fit instead of cropped or rebuilt correctly, circles become ovals, frame lines change thickness, and type can look subtly distorted.
MTG card dimensions in pixels
Pixel dimensions depend on the intended pixels per inch, or PPI. Multiply each physical dimension by the selected PPI. For example, 2.5 inches multiplied by 300 PPI is 750 pixels, while 3.5 inches multiplied by 300 PPI is 1,050 pixels.

People often use DPI when discussing image files, but PPI is the more precise term for raster image resolution. DPI describes output dots produced by a printing process. The distinction does not change the pixel calculation: choose the physical size and intended PPI, then multiply them.
Higher resolution is not automatically better. A 3,000 × 4,200 pixel canvas filled with a small, heavily compressed image still contains a low-detail image. It has simply been enlarged. Check the original art, masks, textures, and symbols rather than judging the file only by its final pixel count.
Should the canvas use trim size or bleed size?
Use a trim-size canvas when you only need the finished 2.5 × 3.5 inch image and no production provider has requested bleed. Use a larger bleed canvas when the selected provider’s template requires artwork beyond the cut line.
These three areas serve different purposes:
- Trim size is the intended final outside size after cutting.
- Bleed is extra background artwork extending beyond the trim line so minor cutting variation does not reveal an unintended white edge.
- Safe area is an inset region where important names, rules text, symbols, and other essential details are less vulnerable to trimming or alignment variation.
One commercial template for a 2.5 × 3.5 inch card adds 0.125 inch of bleed on all four sides. That creates a 2.75 × 3.75 inch production file, equivalent to 825 × 1,125 pixels at 300 PPI. The same template uses a 0.125-inch safe margin inside the trim line. This is a useful example, not a universal standard. With that example, the safe live area measures 2.25 × 3.25 inches because 0.125 inch is removed from both sides of each trim dimension. At 300 PPI, that region is 675 × 975 pixels. Background art can extend through the bleed, but essential information should stay inside the safe area.

Keep important card content away from vulnerable edges
Safe-area planning is not limited to rules text. A custom card may also place its name, mana cost, type line, rarity mark, loyalty values, power and toughness, or set information near an edge. Moving any of those elements too close to the trim line makes ordinary alignment variation much more noticeable.
Prioritize elements according to what the player must recognize during play. The card name, cost, type, rules, and game values should remain readable without relying on a perfect cut. Decorative borders and background textures can tolerate more variation because losing a small portion does not change the card’s meaning.
Full-art and borderless treatments still need bleed. Extend the background image past the trim line rather than enlarging the entire finished card at the last moment. Review readability at the finished card size
A large monitor can hide weak design decisions. Zooming in makes small text, narrow spacing, and low-contrast symbols appear more comfortable than they will at 2.5 × 3.5 inches. Review the card at approximately its final physical size and ask whether each information layer remains distinct.
- Check whether a long name crowds the mana cost or other corner symbols.
- Make sure the type line remains readable without collapsing its spacing.
- Shorten rules text before shrinking it to rescue an overfilled text box.
- Confirm that reminder text is still useful rather than merely present.
- Check loyalty, defense, power, toughness, chapter, or token values at final size.
- Inspect contrast where text or symbols sit over detailed artwork.
- Review the art crop intentionally; do not let automatic scaling remove the subject’s face, weapon, or other focal feature.

Before exporting or handing off a custom card file, run through this checklist:
- Confirm that the finished card is intended to use the standard 2.5 × 3.5 inch size.
- Verify that the canvas preserves the 5:7 trim aspect ratio.
- Download and use the selected provider’s current template when physical production is planned.
- Extend background colors, textures, and full-bleed art through the complete bleed region.
- Keep names, costs, rules text, icons, and card values inside the specified safe area.
- Check that the source art has enough real detail for its size in the layout.
- Avoid stretching art or a finished card face to force it into a differently proportioned canvas.
- Inspect type, symbols, fine frame lines, and art crops at approximate final size.
- Confirm the final pixel dimensions, file format, color requirements, and accepted template version before submission.
- Retain an editable master so a different bleed or safe-area requirement can be applied without rebuilding the card.
- Use artwork and other assets you have permission to use, and keep the result clearly unofficial.
Do not assume that a stated maximum download resolution applies to every template or workflow. When the standard dimensions do not apply
Not every custom game piece should use the standard card canvas. Oversized commanders, plane-style supplements, helper cards, custom dividers, packaging inserts, and display pieces can require different proportions. A printer may also provide a slightly different template because its cutting process, corner treatment, or product construction differs.
Special card types such as Sagas, Battles, planeswalkers, split cards, and double-faced designs can normally use the same outside dimensions when they are meant to function as standard-size cards. Their challenge is internal layout, not a different exterior canvas. Start from the correct physical format, then choose a frame that provides enough space for the type’s required information.
Tokens can also use the standard outside size for easy handling and storage, but an intentionally different token or helper-card format may be reasonable. The decision should be explicit rather than the accidental result of using the wrong aspect ratio.
A brief responsible-use note
Custom cards and downloaded files should remain clearly unofficial and should not be represented as authentic Magic cards.
