Can You Use Activated Abilities More Than Once in MTG?

Can you activate a single ability more than once in one turn? In Magic: The Gathering, the short answer is usually yes, but it depends on a few details that players sometimes overlook. I’ve seen new players get confused when they think a card’s effect only happens once, even though it can be used repeatedly if you can pay the cost over and over.

But then again, not every ability is so generous.

What is an Activated Ability?

An activated ability in Magic is often written in the format “[Cost]: [Effect].” You’ll see something like “{R}: This creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn.” That means you can dump as much red mana into that ability as you like, one activation at a time, and each time you pay {R}, you get another +1/+0. If you’ve ever tried to pump your creature to ridiculous levels with repeated activations, you know how fun that can be. It’s a straightforward concept: if you can pay for it, you can do it again.

However, there are cards that restrict how often you can activate their abilities. Sometimes a card will say “Activate only once each turn.” That’s a clear restriction. Even if you’ve got a full stock of mana just sitting there, ready to be spent, the card won’t let you use the ability more than once that turn. Beetleform Mage is a great example. It has a neat effect, but you can only turn it on one time per turn, which can be a little frustrating if you have extra resources you’d like to spend.

Cost is another thing to watch. If the cost of the ability includes tapping the permanent (like with Mother of Runes), you’re limited by whether or not you can untap that permanent again. Unless you have an effect that untaps it, you’re stuck with only one activation. That’s why some clever combos revolve around finding ways to repeatedly untap a card so you can keep spamming its ability. It’s not always easy to pull off, but it feels amazing when you do.

In my opinion, the biggest source of confusion arises when people mix up activated abilities with triggered abilities. Triggered abilities read “when,” “whenever,” or “at,” and they fire off automatically when a specific event happens. You can’t just decide to trigger them more than once on a whim. They trigger every time the event occurs, and that’s that. If your creature says, “Whenever this creature attacks, you gain 1 life,” you gain that life every time it attacks, not whenever you feel like it. The difference is that activated abilities give you the choice to use them (pay the cost, get the effect), while triggered abilities happen on their own.

What About Planeswalkers?

Planeswalkers follow a special rule too. Their loyalty abilities are indeed activated abilities, but the game rules limit you to one loyalty ability per planeswalker per turn. You can’t just keep adding or subtracting loyalty counters multiple times in the same turn, even if you have the perfect plan for doing so. If you could, some planeswalkers would get out of hand fast.

So can you use activated abilities more than once? Generally, yes. If there’s no text that says “only once” and you can keep paying the cost (including tapping or spending mana), you’re free to go nuts. The real key is reading the card carefully. If there’s a limit, it’ll say so. If it needs tapping, make sure you have a way to untap it if you want multiple uses. Otherwise, you’re stuck with one shot per turn. And if it’s triggered, that’s a whole different story—just wait for the specified event to roll around again.

Magic: The Gathering is full of nuances like this. I’ve watched players discover that they can activate something twice, then realize they should’ve done it earlier in the game and maybe won a turn sooner. But that’s part of Magic’s charm: small details can change the entire outcome of a match. Next time you see an ability you really like, check if you can use it more than once. You might be surprised by how often the answer is yes.
