The pixel figures apply only when the file is built at exactly 300 pixels per inch and uses the stated physical dimensions. They are calculated by multiplying each dimension in inches by 300. Do not enlarge a smaller image to those pixel dimensions and assume it has gained detail; canvas size and image quality are related but distinct concerns.
One eighth of an inch is exactly 3.175 mm, so a template labeled “3 mm” is close but not identical. Likewise, 63 × 88 mm and 2.5 × 3.5 inches are similar reference sizes, not interchangeable measurements. Choose the dimensions specified by one production template and use them consistently from layout through export.
What belongs in each zone
The bleed area should contain a natural continuation of the design rather than newly important artwork. Extend background color, frame texture, atmospheric effects, or nonessential portions of an illustration through the bleed boundary. If the cut shifts slightly, the exposed edge should still look intentional.
Do not place a second border at the outer bleed boundary. That creates another visible line that can become uneven after trimming. The bleed is sacrificial space, not an extra frame around the card.
Keep the following elements inside the safe area whenever the selected template permits:
- Card name and any information needed to distinguish the card
- Mana cost and other functional symbols
- Type line and subtype information
- Rules text, reminder text, and loyalty abilities
- Power and toughness or other essential game values
- Set information that must remain legible
- Artist credit or required attribution
Not every decorative feature needs to stay inside the safe area. Art can cross the trim line, and a frame texture can approach or pass it. The practical test is whether losing a narrow strip would change how the card is identified, interpreted, or played.

Full-art and borderless cards still need safe areas
A borderless design removes a visual buffer; it does not remove cutting variation. Full-art cards often make edge shifts less obvious because a continuous illustration survives the cut better than a narrow geometric frame. Why thin borders are difficult
A thin border makes even a small trim shift visually obvious. One side appears heavier while the opposite side becomes narrow or disappears. Extending the border color into the bleed can prevent a contrasting sliver at the edge, but it cannot guarantee equal visible border thickness.
If symmetry is essential, give the border enough width to tolerate ordinary variation under the chosen printer’s specification. Otherwise, use edge-to-edge art or a frame treatment whose outer edge does not need to be perfectly centered. Check the layout at finished size
A card can look spacious while enlarged on a monitor and cramped at its intended physical size. Review the design at approximately finished size, concentrating on the name, mana cost, type line, rules box, and bottom information. The safe area prevents cutting loss, but it does not automatically provide good typography or contrast.
Use a temporary safe-area overlay while designing. Anything functional that touches or crosses it deserves another look.
